Datum Secure IRATA Qualifcation

Two engineers from The Datum Group have secured their Industrial Rope Access Trade Association Qualification.

Technical engineer Aidan Taylor and Site Technician Patrick Nedley completed the five day course to secure their Level 1 IRATA certification.

It means Datum can provide in-house monitoring, surveying and installation services to areas that would be otherwise inaccessible by conventional means.

David Pilkington, Senior Contract Manager, explained: “Installations, tests and surveys that need to be carried out in areas that cannot be scaffolded or accessed by a MEWP (Mobile Elevated Working Platforms) require technical rope access to achieve required goals.

“Having the IRATA qualification means Datum’s Engineers and Technicians can now provide this service in-house and therefore offer a far wider range of services to clients.

“Datum’s IRATA qualified staff use state-of-the-art PPE and safety equipment to ascend and descend vertical structures and geological features.

“The IRATA training provides staff with the skills to carry out rope transfers, rebelays and aid climbing, in order to position themselves for work accurately and safely.”

Aidan and Patrick completed the five day training course, four days practical and one day assessment at specialist training organisations SpanSet in Middlewich, Cheshire.

SpanSet are training specialists and are a full member of the IRATA and also provide IRATA equipment.

The IRATA is recognised as the world’s leading authority on industrial rope access. The UK Association was formed to solve maintenance challenges in the offshore oil and gas industry.

The techniques developed by the IRATA is used for repairs, maintenance, inspection and access work and boats an unrivalled safety record, short set-up and dismantling time, positive environmental benefits and removes the need for invasive access equipment or disruption to a worksite.

Pilkington, added: “The IRATA certification will allow versatility to our projects. Having this specialised competence in our workforce, will add value and merit to tender applications for clients knowing we have this experience in house.”

Datum join more than 400 member companies around the world to secure the IRATA qualification, adding to the 100,000 rope access technicians worldwide.
